Rosacea Q & A

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disorder characterized by red skin and small blood vessels. Rosacea often appears on the face, across the cheeks, and on the forehead, but can also appear on the ears, chest, and back. As the condition progresses, small blisters may appear. They may be filled with clear liquid or pus and resemble a pimple or whitehead. Rosacea can come and go, sometimes presenting conditions for several days or weeks and then gradually disappear for several months. Rosacea is mostly diagnosed in fair-skinned, middle-aged women, and can affect anyone at any time. With years of experience working with rosacea, Dr. Weinman offers effective treatment plans for his patients.

Is rosacea preventable?

Though rosacea isn’t preventable, Dr. Weinman effectively treats the symptoms. When preventing a rosacea flare up, Dr. Weinman recommends controlling the symptoms from the start, preventing them from becoming more severe, and avoiding abrasive or harsh cleansers in favor of gentle cleansers enriched with ingredients like chamomile and lavender. He also suggests avoiding wrinkle creams or products with heavy chemicals as they may irritate the area further.

How does Dr. Weinman treat Rosacea?

Rosacea cannot be cured, but an experienced dermatologist like Dr. Weinman can help control the symptoms and prevent discomfort. He recommends using oral antibiotics to help control inflammation and infection caused by excessive bacteria. Dr. Weinman also suggests medications that reduce the appearance of the small blood vessels that appear during a rosacea flare up. Topical creams also help reduce the redness and help soothe irritation. Further, cleansing the area thoroughly reduces the bacteria, debris, and irritation. If you’re suffering from rosacea, call South Florida Dermatology or schedule an appointment online. Dr. Weinman and his team will work with you to find the proper treatment to effectively treat and control your rosacea.
